PTAB finds claims of Norred’s heart valve patents invalid over prior art

June 29, 2015 – Administrative Patent Judge Mitchell G. Weatherly in a June 25, 2015 final written decision held that Medtronic, Inc. had demonstrated by a preponderance of evidence that claims 16 and 19-24 of Troy R. Norred’s U.S. Patent No. 6,482,228, entitled: “Percutaneous Aortic Valve Replacement,” were anticipated by two prior art references.  The IPR proceeding is Case IPR2014-00395.  The technology at issue in the ’228 patent relates to a percutaneous aortic heart valve that is placed by catheter and held in place with a stent system.  The ’228 patent is also the subject of the co-pending litigation Norred v. Medronic, Inc., No. 2:13-cv-02061 (D. Kan.).
